Chez

The French word "chez" really means "at the place of". So, when you say "chez nous", you are saying "at the place of us" or, when translated more aptly, "our place". Since "chez nous" means "our place", it could also be taken to mean "our house" or "our home".

When you go to the doctor you might say "Je vais chez docteur" or "Je vais chez medecin". You are going to the place of the doctor, or rather, you are going to the doctor's offices.

Similarly, you might a French person referring to "chez bureau", which means "at the place of the office". A better translation would be "at the office" or "at our offices".

You even get restaurants that include the word "Chez". So, if a restaurant is called "Chez Pierre", it means Pierre's Place.
